Willing Participants
In his inaugural address on January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy spoke the now famous phrase, “…ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country…”.
These inspiring words helped vaporize the then national anxiety replacing it with personal anticipation though participation. It created a real sense that the citizens were on a common mission with their leader. These words gave each citizen of the nation a considerable lift, a tremendous sense of confidence, a willingness to engage in difficult tasks.
Three months after this address, President Kennedy founded the Peace Corp to promote world peace and friendship through global service and staffed it with many willing, enthusiastic, unpaid American volunteers sacrificing their time for the opportunity to forward world peace.
What motivates individuals to sacrifice their time willingly and voluntarily, putting aside their personal aspirations and life, for a cause? The answer is crucial for you and me as called children of God.
