The Heart of a Volunteer
Lt. Col James Doolittle, who led the retaliatory bombing strike on Tokyo in the Spring of 1942, stated, “There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.” 80 men were willing to give their lives for that mission. God’s elect are also called upon to be “freewill offerings” and volunteers in the army of God. However, that mission is to result in transformed hearts and minds that no longer war against each other.
God’s elect also have the opportunity to be volunteers as God’s witnesses to the world – people who willingly lay down their lives as true examples of God’s redemptive power to reconcile all mankind to Himself. They are freewill offerings and volunteers in the army of God. This type of heart is not natural to man, but is one that is formed by God’s Holy Spirit working with each them. Pentecost is the reminder that on this day God poured out His Spirit on Christ’s disciples thus beginning a spiritual called out congregation of disciples. His volunteers recognize that God’s cause is greater than any individual life.
