Christ’s messages to the Seven Churches of Revelation clearly demand that His people perform good works and overcome sin. We are to resist the Adversary and subdue our own human nature in obedience to God.
Yet man is corrupt. We have a certain limited capacity to conform to the letter of the Law by ourselves, but we cannot perceive our own nature, truly repent, or ultimately resist Satan on our own. Our works apart from God, no matter how “good”, are nothing.
Thus, we will fail in overcoming if we try to accomplish it by our own will. The Holy Spirit provides the eyes and ears we lack. This power is fostered in us by the symbiotic relationship between grace, faith, and obedience. If we believe and draw near to Him, He will draw near to us.
It is only through Christ living in us (i.e. His faith, His righteousness, His works) that authentic overcoming is made possible. Trust that Christ lives His life in those called and faithful. When we yield to the Holy Spirit, Christ our brother and God our Father make us a new creation; an expression of their perfect character.
Remove that which hinders the power of the Holy Spirit and overcome the Accuser by the
blood of Christ, the Lamb of God.
