The natural function of man’s mind is to limit God. It is a human proclivity to try and put a box around God – using human intellect to attempt to define God’s invisible attributes.
A recent article posed a question that was originally attributed to Einstein: “If there is a God who created the entire universe and ALL of its laws of physics, does God follow God’s own laws? Or can God supersede his own laws, such as travelling faster than the speed of light and thus being able to be in two different places at the same time?” In response, the author poses an additional question: “If God wasn’t able to break the laws of physics, she arguably wouldn’t be as powerful as you’d expect a supreme being to be. But if she could, why haven’t we seen any evidence of the laws of physics ever being broken in the Universe?”
The human limitation becomes quickly obvious. God is a “she.” This is a man-made box. Because God is Spirit, He is invisible to the human eye and, consequently, to the mind. Perhaps a better question would be, “Can God be limited by what He creates?”
The Word of God assists us in opening our minds to a greater reality of His invisible attributes. God is revealed as being omnipresent. “’Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so I shall not see him?’ says the Lord; ‘Do I not fill heaven and earth?’ says the Lord” (Jeremiah 23:24).
David understood that God’s presence is everywhere when he said, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me” (Psalm 139:7-10). God inhabits heaven and earth, and all things are upheld by His power (Hebrews 1:3).
God is not limited by the laws of physics He created. These laws regulate what He created – they don’t regulate the Creator. “And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17, KJV).
In His omnipresent state, God looks intently upon each of us individually. We have His undivided attention. “You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off” (Psalm 139:2). “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). God knows our thoughts and intentions.
Furthermore, He is always with His people. “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5).
With the opening of our minds, we have been granted the blessing of seeing God’s invisible attributes. The restrictions of physical life have been removed. We need to use those minds to undo the limits man places around God. We need to seek to expand our view of God. “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:24-25).
The day is coming when we will hear the voice of a great multitude saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!” (Revelation 19:6). Let’s rejoice in God’s all powerful, unlimited presence which permeates all that exists.
