UPDATE – September 6
Greetings,
Are you patient? Patience is a quality that is emphasized to the New Testament church in conjunction with the working of God’s Holy Spirit. Christ stated, “By your patience possess your souls” (Luke 21:19). Three of the seven churches of Revelation are commended for their patience and endurance, a quality we all need. James referenced patience throughout his letter – giving a context of patience being a result of the testing of our faith. He encouraged the church to let patience have its perfect work (James 1:3-4). Clearly patience is a fruit of God’s Spirit and its expression in our lives produces spiritual strength and growth.
Quite specifically in Revelation we see that the patience of the saints is associated with keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12). Paul encouraged the members to run with endurance (patience) the race that is set before us. Obedience to God’s law in the face of this world requires constant endurance and patience. It is not an easy task and it is one that can make us tired. Paul also tells us to look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. He endured hostility against Himself and we are to look at that example in order not to become weary and discouraged (Hebrews 2:1-2).
As Christ lives His life in us, imparting the faith we need in His life, death and resurrection – the author and finisher of our faith – we look beyond the here and now with all of its discouraging aspects. We look beyond to the spiritual conclusion with cheerful (hopeful) endurance, knowing that the eternal reward is certain. In faith and with patience we possess our souls.
