Building on the New Commandment
As we draw close to the Passover we evaluate our lives. We seek to know and understand our shortcomings. We do this because we want to repent of them, seek forgiveness and draw closer to God. When Christ observed His last Passover with His disciples He instituted new symbols. Breaking bread He gave it to them saying, “This is my body given for you”. Next He explained the wine saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you”. This same night He washed the disciples’ feet as an outward sign of humility and service. He then proceeded to tell them something very important. It is recorded in John 13:34: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” The word translated ‘new’ is the Greek word kainous, which means ‘new’ as in ‘unused’. Christ recognized their attitude did not include love toward one another and that needed to change in them and in us today.
