Unconditional Service
As our human nature predisposes us to focus on the self, it has become unnatural for us to look after each other—to serve each other. Instead of serving being a normal, natural, and constant state of mind, we congratulate ourselves because we’ve taken a time-out from the concerns of the self to do it.
Service is the antidote to self-centeredness. The best way to deal with self-centeredness is to serve. It’s not a feeling. It’s recognizing that there is this thing in me that wants what it wants. It has the potential to wreck my marriage, wreck my relationships with my family, wreck my relationships at work and I need to get it under control. There’s this thing in me that if I don’t get control of it, it will ruin my life. So God, what do I do? God says, “You serve unconditionally.”
