The Truth Will Set You Free
“The truth will set you free” is a broadly used and abused slogan. Christ said it. What does it mean? It’s important to understand the entire statement Christ made, and to consider the context in which it was delivered. Truth in the Bible includes factual knowledge, the moral laws and statues of scripture, and discernment that is revealed by God through the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, truth is reality; the way things really are, as given by the Creator God who made it that way. The freedom of which Christ spoke is not unrestricted personal expression, but being aligned with the purpose for which we were created – God’s purpose. Christ conditioned access to this truth upon abiding in the word; i.e. holding and continuing in Christ’s teachings. Or, as the idea may be more completely understood, by abiding “the Word”. The Word who is God. For it is Christ Himself who created all things and in whom life consists. It is Christ who defines what reality is. Indeed, Christ is the Truth. And it is Christ who frees from the bonds of sin and it’s consequences.
