The Helpful Word
Modern culture is increasingly permissive, perverse and crass. Nothing is off limits or inappropriate. Entertainment seeks to shock. Competing to be heard, we use more powerful and attention grabbing exclamation. It’s a loud, gross, self-centered world. Yet Ephesians 4:29 instructs Christians to use NO unwholesome talk, but rather to speak ONLY helpful words. Job said that “ears taste words like tongue tastes food”. How do your words taste? Getting it right is hard. Applying the scripture in reverse order may be useful. For the benefit of those who listen, speak what is helpful for building others up according to their need, then no unwholesome talk will come out of your mouth.
