The Economics of Contentment: Lessons from the Land Sabbath
On the Day of Atonement God commanded the proclamation of the Jubilee, declaring liberty, release from debts, and return of land to its rightful stewards (Leviticus 25). These laws revealed His ownership of creation, prevented permanent dispossession, restrained wealth accumulation, and provided a safety net against poverty. The Land Sabbath every seventh year likewise required ceasing from production and debt collection, teaching reliance on God’s provision and contentment with what He gives. Together they foreshadow the Kingdom’s just economy and call us now to stewardship, trust, and entering God’s rest.
