Root of Bitterness
Having a root of bitterness can be viewed as harboring deep resentment and animosity towards someone who has offended or slighted you.
That response is not acceptable to God who demands love of neighbor and even enemy. He knows that root can eat you up physically, mentally and spiritually.
The root of bitterness found in Hebrews 12:15 and Deuteronomy 29:18 describes an even more troubling root that can destroy your relationship with God and negatively affect many others.
The root described in these verses is found in people who believe they can choose for themselves what to believe and how to worship all the while thinking all is okay in their relationship with God.
This is a presumptuous attitude of self-reliance and self-determination that will bear poisonous fruits of confusion, apathy, anger and bring defiled practices into the church.
We need a root built up in Jesus Christ and grounded in love.
