Joining Up: Horses Show How to Be at Rest with God
A horse breaking technique called “joining up” illuminates God’s nature, and shows us how to obtain rest in an intimate relationship with God.
God’s invisible attributes are understood by observing creation. He created a special relationship between mankind and horses that can produce both joy through the intimacy and connection of a close man/animal bond and also help accomplish productive works.
A basic technique to create that bond is called “joining up”, whereby the trainer pressures and chastises a horse until it yields to his authority. The animal should transition through four steps; listening, showing humility and respect, expressing contentment, and finally drawing near.
The horse finds rest by acknowledging the leadership of the trainer, and attaching intimately to him. This not only provides a useful model of how we can find rest with God, it also proves the awesome value of engaging with God’s creation.
