First and Great Commandment
From the book of Deuteronomy, we learn how God allowed the children of His son Israel to wander for 40 years in the desert, so that He might teach and discipline them.
There are numerous similarities between Jesus, the Son of God being tempted by Satan after 40 days of fasting and the children of Israel, God’s son, wandering for 40 years in the wilderness.
Every answer Christ gave to Satan is found in Deuteronomy. In fact, the three temptations of Jesus found in Matthew follow very closely the Great Commandment, found in Deuteronomy 6:4-5. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and all your might.”
