A December 2, 2015 BBC News headline read,
Impression of biblical king’s seal found in Jerusalem
The discovery was unearthed at an archaeological excavation conducted under the direction of Dr, Eliat Mazar, a respected archaeologist affiliated with the Hebrew University’s Institute of Archaeology. She is the granddaughter of the now deceased well-known archaeologist, Benjamin Mazar.
The seal attached to official documents is also known as a bulla. BBC said,
“The bulla, is imprinted with the symbol of a winged sun and an inscription in an ancient Hebrew script, saying: “Belonging to Hezekiah [son of] Ahaz king of Judah”.
Hebrew University stated that the winged sun symbol at that time was used widely throughout the ancient Near East as a symbol of royal power and proclamation of divine protection.
However, King Hezekiah’s personal seal featured a sun with the sheltering wings angled down and a life symbol at the end of each wing. The university surmised that this was possibly to further reflect God’s sheltering protection and miraculous extension of the king’s own life.
