German TV’s DW News introduced a week long series today on Europe’s future by asking “whether it’s time for a United States of Europe”. Some see the escalating refugee-migrant situation as perhaps the most critical in a string of major crises propelling the EU in that direction.
A number of news sites published an August 20th Reuters news story that reported,
“Germany and France will press the European Union to move faster and with more unity to deal with the worsening refugee crisis … “
Europe’s leaders agree it is extremely serious. According to several news sources, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel remarked it will,
“preoccupy Europe much, much more than the issue of Greece and the stability of the euro”.
And the TV segment, airing Monday the 24th, showed the German leader talking openly about a two speed EU and moving ahead without Britain and Denmark, the two EU members who do not use the euro.
