The October 31, 2015 issue of Germany’s news magazine, Der Spiegel, reads “Germany in a State of Emergency” and in large bold letters, “The Fix.” The spotlight is on Angela Merkel but not at all in a good way.
Why? A dark scary mood once more appears to be sweeping over much of Germany, and the rest of Europe as well, fueled by the seemingly unmanageable migrant situation. And that mindset can be detected in some of the cover’s graphics.
The words on one sign behind her, seen with her picture, translate into English as “The Downfall.” Another sign just behind her says, “Stop the Islamization of Europe.” Above it you can see a gallows.
Waiting In the Wings?
In the foreground, some of her opponents look ready to step in and remove her from center stage. Those pictured as eager to see her go include Bavarian Horst Seehofer, leader of the Christian Social Union, her sister party.
Chancellor Merkel had been widely respected by her own people. A number in Germany and elsewhere also viewed her as a pragmatic moderating force. But unless something dramatic happens to reverse the growing perception at home that she is to blame for the mess the migrant crisis has become, her time in office could end within two years.
The next German federal election is to take place in 2017. An election can also be held earlier if the opposition calls for a vote of no confidence and nominates a potential successor at the same time.
What is troubling to some is who might succeed the Chancellor and the direction Europe seems to be heading.
