The National Public Radio (NPR) website’s title for February 13, 2011 read,
“The Dark Origins Of Valentine’s Day”
The second holiday of the year borrowed from the ancient Romans will roll around in a few days – the previous one being the observance of January 1st as New Year’s Day.
Not that long ago February 14th was known as Saint Valentine’s Day; the NPR story covers its evolution. But in today’s less religious societies, increasingly Saint is being scrapped.
The National Geographic pointed out on its website,
“More than a Hallmark holiday, Valentine’s Day, like Halloween, is rooted in pagan partying.”
Traditionally-minded Catholics, the Christian Orthodox churches (some on a different date), and some Protestant denominations still celebrate it as a saint’s day. It is also quite popular in Asia in countries never considered Christian.
