Deutsche Welle interviewed an ecologist, Richard Inger, on November 21, 2014. Inger pointed out that Europe’s birds are disappearing an alarming rate.
He said,
“Our estimates suggest that we have lost 400 million birds since 1980.”
When asked why folks should care, he mentioned the effect that, for instance, would have on global coffee production.
“if we exclude birds from coffee plantations, we actually get a much lower yield of coffee.”
