Luke the Physician
Today there are a wide variety of physicians in various fields such as family medicine, Internal medicine, pediatrics, and various specialties. A physician is a licensed health professional who practices medicine to promote, maintain, or restore health. Outside of western medicine there are other individuals who practice alternative medicine. They may be referred to as an alternative medicine practitioner or a holistic health practitioner. These individuals might utilize herbal medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, or lifestyle counseling, to help individuals maintain or restore health. In the Bible there is an individual who was referred to as “the beloved physician”. His name was Luke. Not only was he mentioned by name but he also wrote two of the books in the New Testament. The Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. Although we don’t know where he received his education, his descriptions of anatomical details indicate he was highly educated. This education trained him how to conduct research through various resources including eye witness interviews. For his Gospel he gathered eyewitness accounts regarding the birth, life, various miracles, and death of Jesus Christ. He wrote that information in an orderly narrative for not only a person of high honor named Theophilis, but it was also canonized as part of the Holy Scriptures for all of us. Together let’s touch the surface of how an inquiry about a physician led to comparisons and appreciation of the Gospel of Luke.
