The events of Pentecost 31 A.D. pointed to the power of God’s Holy Spirit and the immediate growth of the Church with the addition of 3,000 new members in one day. The devout men hearing the Apostle Peter’s address were cut to the heart, knowing they were responsible for Jesus’ death, and acted on the truth given by God through Peter. Most would have had personal knowledge of the events beginning with Jesus Christ’s trial, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension to the Father. What Peter told them opened up understanding of the meaning of the events and days they had observed. Two attributes mentioned in Acts 2:41 and 42 are important for us to take note of. The 3,000 gladly received the Word, repented and were baptized, showing their open mind, willingness to learn, and a meek attitude. They followed up by continuing steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, being meticulous, careful, and persistent in doing, or applying, the truth they had heard. These two attributes combined to produce growth in these individuals and the Church – the body of Christ.
