The Purpose of Righteousness
The Church of God holds to law-keeping as a critical part of pursuing righteousness, as the Bible instructs. That’s good. But within that paradigm, it is easy to let righteous become an end, in-and-of-itself, rather than just a means to an end. The ultimate end-goal for followers of the Way is becoming like God and expressing His perfect love. So in keeping the law, we must investigate our motives; Being honored by God and man, or expressing love to God and man? Love is defined by the law. Yet love illuminates how to observe that law more perfectly. Love is also a better motivation for right choices than self-oriented concerns. So strive to express love rather than to be righteous. Because love is the purpose of righteousness.
