The Baseline of Truth
Christ said to His Father, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17) He said it out of concern for His disciples whom He would soon leave behind and it was said for each true believer who would follow through time.
God’s truth, which is not of human origin, sanctifies the believer – it sets them apart for a holy purpose. His truth is the baseline for a believer – it serves as the foundation for his or her actions. However, we must be aware that we can let our baseline shift if we’re looking at and growing accustomed to the attitudes, behaviors and actions of others who don’t embrace God’s truth.
If allowed, a believer can perceive, as normal, a culture on the verge of apocalypse and thereby find himself or herself unprepared for Christ’s return and unknowable to Him when He comes.
