UK’s general elections will be held next Thursday, May 7th.
Deutsche Welle’s (DW) Journal stated the race was expected to be very close with neither Labor or the Conservative party winning an outright majority. However, some smaller ones, like the UK Independence Party, (UKIP) were expected to do better than ever.
Immigration issues plus pulling out of the European Union are major elements of the UKIP party’s platform. Both themes play well in those working class areas where public opinion is succinctly summed up by the expression,
“Neglected by London and punished by Brussels”.
And according to an article on the DW website, UKIP is also making inroads in at least one wealthy community.
But UKIP’s success is said to be not so much in the parliamentary seats won but its growing influence on public policy.
DW’s Steven Beard is of the opinion that it doesn’t matter how well the UKIP does in in the upcoming election or which major UK party gets the most votes, the real winner will be the advocate for Scotland’s independence, the Scottish National Party.
His DW video report dated April 30, 2015 concluded with,
“It’s not just the economy at stake in this election. In the long run, it could be the unity of the United Kingdom”.
