An article published by Tech Times on June 8, 2014 begins,
“Fasting may often be associated with spiritual meditation and discipline but abstaining from food for two to four days at a time apparently has benefits to the physical wellbeing as well.”
This conclusion was based on research conducted by the University of Southern California and published in the research journal Cell Stem Cell, on June 5, 2014, about the positive effects of that “prolonged fasting”.
We humans naturally fast when we are sleeping around one third of approximately every 24 hours, day in and day out; and that time is already recognized to be so important to our mental and physical health.
Thousands of years ago the book of Isaiah, in chapter 58, indicated choosing to extend that time of fasting, if done right, is good for us spiritually.
The same chapter also mentions physical benefits. Now, medical research confirms such exist.
