How many times have we thought in our minds, “Why doesn’t God just tell me what to do?” If He’s not verbally communicating with us, how do we hear His voice?
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths,” Proverbs 3:6, NKJV.
Sometimes, literally, God directs our physical path. Once, as a young man, before coming into the Truth I was in the military and traveling via California to Korea. I wanted to see the Ambassador College campus and get some answers. Was this really God’s truth?
I arrived in Pasadena with some vague directions toward the campus. I walked and walked and ended up in a bad looking area, so I kept going. What had I gotten myself into? Finally, I came to a nice building and suddenly, the doors opened. The group of people exiting assured me this was Ambassador College.
Why did I go that direction and arrive at that moment? And why did a nice guy among them invite me to stay the night and answer any questions that I had?
In another circumstance, I was traveling to California and had a layover in Denver. My parents lived in Gering, Nebraska, and I decided to reschedule my flight and drive up to see them. I called home several times, but no answer.
As I prayed about this, I picked up my luggage and saw a sign for a hotel with a shuttle service. Arriving at the hotel, I noticed a restaurant/bar area. I thought I don’t need that, so I started toward the elevator but turned around and went to the restaurant anyway.
After a short inspection, I turned around to leave, and heard a voice, my mother’s! My parents were there at that very hotel. They were getting ready to leave for home the next day, and I could ride with them for my visit.
I can’t believe that all happened accidentally. Both were needs and godly ones, and God provided answers.
When we ask for an answer from God it must be according to His principles. For God’s Spirit to work in us, we have to have the right attitude and live according to God’s way. Looking and listening for His guidance.
Sometimes people superstitiously ascribe God’s direction to something they were determined to do anyway. Don’t just look for personal vindication, but seek to understand what God is actually telling you!
Define the problem carefully. Study God’s word on the subject. Pursue wise counsel, but not just from those who agree with you. Sometimes we even need to fast to seek God’s will when a question is very important.
God also communicates to the whole world, and I hope we in the Church are part of that communication! He communicates through blessings and cursings. If we live His way, we’re blessed. If we live another way, we’re cursed. God is in control of all things!
However, God won’t make every decision for us because if He did, how could we grow? He is actively working with each of us now. Correcting us. Guiding us. Allowing circumstance to strengthen and create in us a patient heart.
Go forward using God’s principles, do your homework, and finally, follow through. Above all, ask yourself daily, am I really listening to God?
